Information to Include in a Referral

To support a comprehensive assessment, referral letters should ideally include:

  • Presenting complaint and symptom history
  • Relevant medical and/or dental history
  • Current medications
  • Previous treatments and outcomes
  • Relevant imaging, such as OPG, CBCT, MRI or X-ray. Digital formats are accepted.

Please do not delay a referral if all information or imaging is not available.

Patients can still be assessed, and any additional investigations can be arranged where required.

Urgent Referrals

We will prioritise urgent cases where appropriate and advise on interim management if needed.

What Happens Next

Once a referral is received, the following steps help guide the patient through the assessment process.

Referral Review

The referral information is reviewed to understand the patient’s presenting concerns and the reason for referral.

Appointment Scheduling

The patient is contacted regarding an appointment and any relevant information needed before the consultation.

Clinical Consultation

The consultation includes an appropriate clinical history and assessment, with further investigations considered where indicated.

Communication with the Referring Clinician

Relevant findings, recommendations and the proposed management plan are communicated to the referring clinician as appropriate.

Working Together

We value collaboration and communication with all healthcare professionals involved in a patient’s care. We welcome referrals, clinical queries and opportunities to work together in the assessment and management of orofacial pain and dental sleep medicine conditions.

Collaborative Care

Depending on the patient’s needs, collaboration may involve dentists, general practitioners (GPs), neurologists, ear, nose and throat (ENT) clinicians, respiratory physicians, physiotherapists, acupuncturists, psychologists and other healthcare professionals involved in the patient’s care.

We welcome communication with colleagues across all healthcare disciplines and are happy to discuss individual cases, referral suitability and potential care pathways. Where appropriate, we aim to support coordinated care through communication with the referring clinician and other members of the patient’s healthcare team.
