Clicking in the jaw joint is a frequent issue, particularly among female patients, and, in many instances, little to no treatment is required. On the other hand there are cases where addressing the clicking joint becomes essential. Examples of these cases include situations where the clicking joint causes pain or stiffness and affects the normal functioning of the jaw joint. In these scenarios, specifically tailored treatment plans utilising methods such as bite splints, medications and jaw exercises can be used to help alleviate symptoms.
In a small percentage of cases, patients with clicking joints may progress to a point where the jaw joint itself becomes stiff or locked, often accompanied by painful chewing. While some symptoms may resolve spontaneously, in most cases, direct intervention is often needed.
