What is an Oral Orthotic Device?

An oral orthotic device, also known as a stabilisation splint, bite guard, or night guard, is a custom-made protective device worn in the mouth to help address various issues related to teeth grinding, jaw clenching, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders.

How Does an Oral Orthotic Device Work?

While the exact mechanism of action of oral orthotic devices is not fully understood, they are believed to help modify the brain's response to oral parafunctional habits. Additionally these devices can help by providing a protective barrier between the upper and lower teeth. This in turn can reduce the load on the TMJ and help prevent damage to the teeth and dental restorations caused by grinding and clenching.

How Do I Know If I Need an Oral Orthotic Device?

You may benefit from an oral orthotic device if you experience symptoms such as teeth grinding or clenching at night (sleep bruxism), morning headaches, jaw muscle pain, lockjaw, or sore and sensitive teeth. Additionally, individuals with chronic jaw pain, jaw stiffness, TMJ pain related to arthritis, earaches, or headaches associated with TMJ issues may find relief with an oral orthotic device.

What’s involved?

At NCOFP, our process begins with a comprehensive assessment, considering your medical history and a thorough clinical assessment and examination. Should you decide to move forward with treatment, you'll typically embark on a two-visit journey. The initial visit involves taking impressions of your upper and lower teeth, accompanied by a simple procedure to capture the relationship between them. During the second visit, Dr. Chah personally fits the appliance, which is designed to be used exclusively during sleep and provides personalised care instructions for your unique needs.

How Can an Oral Orthotic Device Help Me?

An oral orthotic device provides protection for the teeth and jaw joints, helping to alleviate symptoms associated with teeth grinding, jaw clenching, and TMJ disorders. By wearing a custom-fabricated bite guard or night guard, individuals can reduce tooth wear, prevent damage to dental restorations, relieve jaw soreness, manage certain headaches, and reduce the risk or impact of jaw locking. Success in using an oral device depends on having the right appliance and consistent use. At NCOFP we work with you to review the benefits and risks of each option so we can create the right device for your specific needs. As part of our comprehensive, evidence-based approach, our treatment programs often incorporate other therapies such as medication management, therapeutic injections, and lifestyle recommendations. Because many orofacial conditions can coexist, influencing and exacerbating each other, we provide a comprehensive, holistic approach that can lead to a more successful recovery.
