Conditions We Treat

Experiencing jaw pain during pregnancy, along with other symptoms like jaw locking or clicking, is a common occurrence. Women are more susceptible to TMJ problems and for many expectant mothers, TMJ issues may surface for the first time during pregnancy, while others may experience a re-emergence of past problems. Unfortunately, jaw pain during pregnancy can disrupt what should be a joyous time in your life.

Why have I developed Jaw Pain during my Pregnancy?

Here are three common reasons why TMJ symptoms may develop during pregnancy:

1. Disrupted Sleep: Sleep disturbances during pregnancy, such as difficulty finding a comfortable position or frequent awakenings, can lead to increased teeth clenching and grinding (sleep bruxism). This can result in stiffness, jaw pain, and headaches.

2. Morning Sickness: The strain caused by vomiting during morning sickness can exert pressure on shoulder, neck, and jaw muscles, potentially causing strains and stiffness in the jaw.

3. Hormone Relaxin: The hormone relaxin, which aids in pelvic ligament elongation for childbirth, can also affect ligaments in other areas, including the jaw. This hormonal change may contribute to jaw discomfort and stiffness for some patients.
